Great efforts were made by organisers to keep Stafford Horse Trials running over the three days of competition.

The traditional British weather paid cost to competition being lost at Gatcomb on the Sunday and on the Saturday evening the organisers at Stafford had gone to extra efforts to keep the competition running by relaying the show jumping on new ground and moving the cross country start box. Very sadly Sunday morning brought the sad news the event had been abandoned due to the lack of access for emergency vehicles.

Competitors on the Friday and Saturday braved the elements with Alice Walker and Rhapsody RFW completing on the best score of the weekend with a dressage score of 16.3 securing the lead in section A of the BE90. Walker took over the ride from her sister Sophie whilst she is completing her finals at Reading University. Walker said, “As I am currently on a gap year, having graduated in June last year, I have been working hard on her flatwork which seemed to pay off on Friday. She is such a super mare to work with and raises her game at competitions. She followed the test with a fabulous jumping round and cruised around the cross country.”

There was also success in section B of the BE90 for local rider, Georgie Rockingham, who rode Sue Proctor’s Keeford Ca Ching to second place with a 30.5 double clear in elements which left most riders with cross country time faults. Rockingham spoke of the mare, known as Kiki at home, “Kiki slipped in the warm up prior to going into the show jumping but she put that behind her and jumped a lovely confident clear round. She felt super confident on the cross country and was full of running.” Rockingham is following this confident run with Norton Disney this coming weekend.

Charlotte Clewlow took the double with wins in section G and I, “I had a fantastic weekend obviously both Eloise and Mr Dundee ran perfectly. It was Eloise’s first ever event and she loved every minute She took to it like duck to water. She has only been jumping since December so both me and her owner Isla Udall are very proud of her, we are hoping this if everything goes to plan that she will get to 1* this year. Mr Dundee was my first ride cross country on the day and he was an absolute pleasure to take round. He is a brilliant grassroots horse and will do this season and be sold as his owner, Hannah Payne, is at university.”

Sadly only two sections of the BE100 ran with success for Lisa Freckingham and stallion, Trehudreth, who took his second top 10 place this season following a 5th at Oasby.

The BE80 (T) also saw just three sections run with Ann Shearing taking her first BE win on 9 year old Mr Shamrock.
