Price returns to defend Badminton crown as entries are announced

Defending champion Jonelle Price is amongst seven previous winners entered for this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials.

Riding Classic Moet, Jonelle will be joined by fellow countrymen and previous champions Mark Todd (NZB Campino) and Andrew Nicholson (Swallow Springs), as well as Sam Griffiths (Billy Liffy and Paulank Brockagh, with whom he won in 2014), Pippa Funnell (Billy Walk On, MGH Grafton Street, Majas Hope and Billy Beware [wait list]), William Fox-Pitt (Little Fire and Ontario) and Oliver Townend (Ballaghmor Class, Cillnabradden Evo, Cooley Master Class and Ulises).

Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials winner Tim Price is also amongst the entries with three horses (Bango, Ringwood Sky Boy, Xavier Faer) as are a host of medallists from last year’s World Equestrian Games. These include Great Britain’s team gold medallists Gemma Tattersall (Pamero 4 and Arctic Soul) Piggy French (Vanir Kamira) and Tom McEwen (Toledo de Kerser). Kristina Cook, who also represented Great Britain at the World Equestrian Games as an individual is also entered with three horses (Billy The Red, Star Witness and Calvino II [wait list]). Ireland’s World Equestrian Games dual silver medallist Padraig McCarthy is entered with Mr Chunky, having been placed 8that Badminton last year.

Germany is represented by two riders including Ingrid Klimke, who has twice been second at Badminton, with Hale Bob OLD.In total, 12 nations are represented, and aside from New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Great Britain and Ireland, riders from France, Japan, Italy, Sweden, Canada, USA and the Netherlands will be competing for the title.

Twelve riders have two more horses entered into the draw. All riders are restricted to a maximum of two starters and must choose their runners before the First Horse Inspection on Wednesday 1st May.

A total of 114 entries were received, resulting in 24 being placed on the waiting list, which is determined by points won in top level international events over the past two years. Nicholas Lucey and Proud Courage head the waiting list.

The 2019 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials will take place from Wednesday 1st May through to Sunday 5th May 2019.

After a record-breaking 28 years as title sponsor of the Badminton Horse Trials, the 2019 event mark the end of an era as title sponsor Mitsubishi Motors has decided to withdraw following the event. However, with this year marking the 70thanniversary of the competition it will be a special year for everybody involved.
