The sun shone for mid week eventers as they headed to Dorset’s picturesque Rushmore Park for Portman Horse Trials.

This year’s course was moved from 2014’s location across the venue to make the most of the hilly terrain for the two days of competition.

On the first day William Fox-Pitt took home the top three places in open novice Section D, winning on the Fox-Pitt Eventing Partnership’s Ramdam De Mons who kept a clean sheet to wind up on a dressage score of 26.3.
The second and third rosettes went to Reinstated and The Soapdodger respectively. William also took home the trophy in Novice Section A riding Little Fire.

Another Olympian, Sweden’s Ludwig Svennerstal, rode his own Aspe into the top spot in Novice Section B, beating their nearest rivals Daisy Berkerley and Ballinteskin Cooper S by half a penalty. Felicity Collins and Just Amazing III started the season on a high by winning open Novice U18 section E while Richard Waygood and Springs Pioneer won Novice Section C.

Georgie Spence and Kitty King won a BE100 section each. Georgie took home Section H on Friday Night, four penalties ahead of Gemma Tattersall’s Tillingbourne, while Kitty and Darustud Cooley put in a cool performance in the dressage arena to finish 19.8 in Section G.

This first phase mark was only beaten in this section by Jock Paget and Zazu who scored 18 but adding 2.8 cross country time penalties pushed this pair into second place. Jessica Acheson and Creevagh Connection took the title in BE100 Open Section l while Katie Hancock (Kilcandra Rambo Ray) won the BE100 Plus Section J.

Another impressive dressage performance was put in my Camilla Earnshaw who rode Cafre Lunar Eclipse for a score of 22, the pair then rolled one pole in the second phase but a fast clear in the final phase meant they secured the prize money in BE90 Section l.

Jo May (RBF Masquerade) and Julie Bush (Atteychree Prince) finished level pegging when they both backed up a 26 dressage with a double clear but the former finishing closer to the cross country time which meant she took home the top prize in BE90 Section K.

Another double clear came from Sophie Clotworthy’s Baileys Spirit who headed the leaderboard in BE90 Section M on 30.

The big class of the event went to Sara Squires who rode the eight-year-old mare Que Sera to the top of the leaderboard in Intermediate Novice Section F, the first time the mare has run at this level.

EVENTING WORLDWIDE SUPPORTS RIDER’S CHARITY AT PORTMAN

The team at EWW are always keen to support charity, especially equestrian related ones. As a special initiative EWW photographer Tanzy Lee is working with the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund. www.mdirf.co.uk

Tanzy has kindly offered to donate 50% of all sales made from his photographs taken at the recent Portman event. The hugely important charity supports people who have suffered from an accident around horses, especially where other relief is inadequate or unobtainable and they have nowhere else to turn. The Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund helps those from all walks of life and irrespective of whether an accident has happened on or around horses and at home or at a riding event.

Photographer Lorraine Porter will also be making a donating to the charity from the sale of her Portman photographs.

Even a small amount such as £10 can help to support a carer for an hour, while £50 can pay for a physiotherapy treatment. The fund helps in many ways providing:

  • Professional medical and legal advice
  • Moral support to both beneficiaries and their families. Often, all that is needed is a listening ear.
  • Practical help where it is most needed.

In the past, they have provided wheelchairs, special beds, house adaptations, stair lifts, physiotherapy, stable help and financial assistance to help individuals over their immediate and long term problems.

With their Patron being Zara Phillips, the fund clearly has links with eventing; despite supporting all those working with or riding horses.
