Peter Thomsen withdraws from German team selection

German event rider Peter Thomsen has withdrawn his horse from the selection process for the Olympic team due to injury.

The rider had been in consideration for the team which will represent Germany as it seeks to defend its title in Rio with Horseware’s Barney. But the horse has been found to be suffering from tendonitis which rules them out of selection.

The combination were part of the team which won the Nations Cup at Houghton Hall and the 55-year-old is one of the most experienced German team event riders winning Olympic team gold in 2008 and 2012.

Thomsen said: “Unfortunately Barney has contracted slight tendonitis. Barney has done so much for me that after consultation with the veterinarian, owners and trainers we will not ride him in the short-term use, even if it costs us the participation in the Olympic Games It should not be.”

He added: “In 2017 we will again fight together to take part in the European Championships in Strzegom, until then I have everything crossed that the German successfully defend their title in Rio.”
