NORTON DISNEY (2)

Sarah Carless reports ….

Norton Disney marks three wins on the trot for Hayward

Norton Disney marked the end of a successful British Eventing season, particularly for one grassroots rider. It was the Lincolnshire venue’s second British Eventing competition of the year, and attracted more than 600 horse and rider combinations, running classes from BE80 (T) to Open Novice.

Nottinghamshire based Laura Hayward continued her extremely successful end to the season. She took her third win in a row in BE100 Section A with Stanhopes Travelling Man, having previously won at both Askham Bryan College and Oasby (2). Norton Disney marked their fifth win of the year. Before this year Laura, who is a show jumper, had not evented before and it was a chance opportunity that introduced her to British Eventing.

She says: “Stan is owned by Sarah Reeve, who I have worked for the last year. Sarah asked me if I wanted to show jump him over the winter. When his usual eventing jockey was injured early in the year she then asked if I wanted to give eventing a go. I thought it would be a good opportunity as I love producing young horses and Stan has shown me the way – he’s a great horse to learn from. He’s been brilliant all season and we have qualified for the Mitsubishi Motors Cup at Badnminton. I’m quite competitive but going to the first event at Oasby this year I was thinking what am I doing? I had hoped I would do well this year but I never expected it to go this well – Stan has been placed at every event bar one

Laura was also fourth in BE90 Section N with Rockmills, who also won at Askham Bryan College and Oasby (2). She added: “I own Rockmills with Sarah and we bought him from Ireland in August where he had done a bit of show jumping. We took him to Frickley Park for a nice run and then he had a month of show jumping where he was first equal in the five year old championship at the Arena UK Festival. We entered the last three events of the year and I’m delighted as he has improved as he has gone – I’m really hopeful for him next year.”

Norton Disney also hosted a regional final for next year’s Mitsuibishi Motors Cup at BE100. The winner of the section was Rachael Sargeant and Tambourine Man II. The combination competed at the grassroots championships this year coming 41st in the BE100 Final. It will be their third visit to Badminton in 2016 having also competed in the BE90 final in 2014.

Norton Disney marked the end of a successful 2015 for many of the competitors. In BE100 Section J, Rachel Holden and Martel made it five wins this year. Their previous victories came at Great Witchingham International (1), Brekenborough (2), Frickley Park (1) and Frickley Park (2).  Another rider having a successful finish to the season was Harriette Howard. With Starholme Walter Mitty she took the win in BE90 Section N, having won at Bishop Burton and picking up a second place at Askham Bryan College the previous weeks. The event also produced a trio of first time British Eventing competitors with first time wins in the BE80 (T) sections. The winners were Kate Knight with Young King in BE80 (T) Section D, Isabella Frost and Ringwood Sasnakara in BE80 (T) Section E and Alice Greenacre with Tusox in BE80 (T) Section F.
