MUSKETEER EVENTS – WHITFIELD HORSE TRIALS

Musketeer Events Whitfield Horse Trials kicked off to a great start on its first day of competition.

A new addition to the British Eventing calendar, the first day (Tuesday) boasted 350 entries, from BE90 to Novice.

After a quick change of fencing (The Farmers Bloodhounds annual Point to Point took place only 2 days before) the new cross country course was well built and although lacking a water complex, offered excellent going and a flowing track that encouraged the horses to pick up a forward rhythm.

The BE90 class kick-started the mornings competition with a few victims claimed by the open ditch at fence 7, proving to be the ‘bogey jump’ for many riders throughout the day.

BE90 Section A celebrated 3 double clears and sub 30 dressage scores for the top 3 riders
21 PICANINI BHISIKITI Hicks, Darren 28.0 (72.00) – – (4:41) – 28.0 1
31 COOLODGE SOX Ridout, Laura 28.5 (71.50) – – (4:19) – 28.5 2
23 WELL TED Bennion, Moira 29.0 (71.00) – – (4:21) – 29.0 3

BE90 Section B
77 STREET LIFE Payne, Jo 29.8 (70.25) – – (4:20) – 29.8 1
82 DYCOTT PAINTED LADY Zoryk, Sarah 31.5 (68.50) – – (4:14) – 31.5 2
78 CONFETTI Bradshaw, Emily 32.0 (68.00) – – (4:22) – 32.0 3

BE90 Section C
111 STOCKADE Fielding, Claire 25.5 (74.50) – – (4:41) – 25.5 1
120 ENDURO A DALRIADA Pickles, Colina 27.8 (72.25) – – (4:47) – 27.8 2
123 TSH TANGO Canton, Tina 30.3 (69.75) – – (4:22) – 30.3 3

A quick change of course led to the start of the Novice class. A cleverly built showjumping track, over slightly undulating ground, overall rode very well.
Only 1 rider in the top 10 of Novice section D failed to jump a double clear.
The cross country time proved fairly easy to achieve with more combinations accumulating time faults for going too fast rather than too slowly-maybe this has something to do with the event being based on point to point course?!

Novice Section D
175 HRS KILTEALY STAR How, Tom 28.8 (71.25) – – (4:16) – 28.8 1
177 DINKY III Edmundson, Mary 30.5 (69.50) – – (4:04) – 30.5 2
152 SHANNONDALE CASEY Norvill, Hannah (NZL) 30.5 (69.50) – – (4:03) – 30.5 3

Novice Section E
230 DRAKES WAY Forbes, Elly 25.5 (74.50) – – (4:05) – 25.5 1
209 CUNDLEGREEN BIRTHDAY GIRL Smith, Caroline 27.8 (72.25) – – (4:03) – 27.8 2
217 LOMOTO Riley, Jane Emma 30.0 (70.00) – – (4:15) – 30.0 3

Finally the 2 BE100 sections were underway and although the cross country course didn’t cause many problems the optimum time was beaten by many combinations who incurred too fast time penalties.
BE100 Section F
283 GLASKER CLOVER GIRL Staples, Brook (AUS) 28.0 (72.00) – – (4:22) – 28.0 1
285 APPACHE BREEZE Woolley, Rebecca 26.5 (73.50) – 3.0tf (4:07) – 29.5 2
284 ESME II Edmundson, Mary 30.0 (70.00) – – (4:26) – 30.0 3

BE100 Section G
331 ALL OR NOTHING II Postolowsky, Alex 27.0 (73.00) – – (4:14) – 27.0 1
324 MED NIGHT ATTITUDE TOO Clark, Anthony 27.5 (72.50) – – (4:10) – 27.5 2
318 JILLY QUE Bradshaw, Emily 29.3 (70.75) – – (4:23) – 29.3 3

Overall the event was a fantastic experience, with full viewing of the cross country course for owners and spectators on top of the hill and easy access for lorries off the A43, emitting those pesky country lanes that are prone to scratch a smart paint job!

A few tweaks here and there, such as some slight adjustments to the Dressage arenas and perhaps a little better ground for the showjumping collecting ring would be nice, but at the end of the day, we are event riders, riding event horses and a true test of skill as a rider is being able to cope with all types of ground conditions that are thrown our way!

Well done to Musketeer Events who, as always, put on a super event and I for one cannot wait to see this new venue thrive and develop for next year- I will certainly be back!
