A sunny morning greets the competitors at the Land Rover Burghley Horse trials for what promises to be a thrilling four days of action.
After the First Horse inspection, over seen by the ground jury of Nick Burton (President), Andrew Bennie (NZL) and Christina Klingspor (SWE), 74 horse and rider combinations from ten nations make up the start list with dressage starting at 9.30am.
First up in the dressage arena will be Great Britain’s Oliver Townend with the first of his three rides Dromgurrihy Blue.
Other notable combinations doing their dressage tests today include Burghley debutant Michael Jung of Germany on the first of his two rides Fischerrocana FST.
Australia’s representatives include Sam Griffiths who rides his former Badminton winner Paulank Brockagh whilst compatriots Paul Tapner and Andrew Hoy bring forward Vanir Kamira and Rutherglen respectively.
The British contingent is led by Pippa Funnell on Redesigned whilst European team mate Francis Whittington comes into the arena today on Fernhill Highlight. Fan favourits Ben Way (Galley Light) and Louise Harwood (Mr Potts) will also be in action on Day 1.
The guinea pig test was ridden by Dani Evans on Smart Time, whom she will ride at the European Eventing Championships at Blair Castle next week. Should they have been competing they would have gained 48.1 penalties.
