Eventing Worldwide’s Guide to Badminton; Where to stay in 2016?

In 2015, Eventing Worldwide bought you its guide on where to stay for the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. This year, we’re taking you off the beaten track, telling you about the best Airbnb places to stay, all within easy reach of the world famous event. But you’ll have to be quick, as these beauties won’t stay vacant for long! Whether a small group or a large party, there’s something for everyone……..

For 2/4 guests

The Courtyard Barn, near Malmesbury

The Courtyard Barn is a beautifully renovated Cotswold stone barn located on a private farm 10 minutes from Malmesbury. Located at the end of a mile long drive, amidst 200 acres of organic pastureland, provides a relaxing base for guests to relax. The accommodation comprises of one bedroom, bathroom, small kitchen area and living room.

Breakfast is included every day between 8-9am. A breakfast hamper will be delivered to your door, including includes local hot bacon rolls with condiments, assorted juice, yoghurts and cereals – the perfect start to the day. Eating out in the evenings will be no issue as there are a variety of high quality eateries in the surrounding area.

The Stable Flat, Lea

The Stable flat is situated in the grounds of a lovely old farmhouse with stunning gardens and surrounds. The charming loft renovation has 2 double bedrooms, separate bathroom with shower/bath, a fully equipped kitchen and open plan living and dining area. It is ideal for families and offers a cot and a high chair for a young child.

The village of Lea is situated on the outskirts of Malmesbury so is just a 20 minute drive from Badminton. Its location also means there is plenty of eating out options, including the village pub which is just a short walk away.

For 6/8 people 

Turnpike Cottage, Tetbury

Turnpike Cottage is a charming detached cottage on the outskirts of Tetbury. It is just a minutes’ walk away from the town centre and all that Tetbury has two offer. The cottage can sleep up to 7 people, although would provide more luxurious surroundings for 5 guests. The larger of the two double bedrooms is a family room with double and single beds and there is a sofa-bed in the sitting room. The sitting room is a generous size and is extremely comfortable and homely, perfect for relaxing after a long day. The property also boasts a garden which is laid to lawn with decking at the end so guests can enjoy the beautiful views of Tetbury.

Just a 20 minute drive from Badminton, Tetbury offers a variety of dining out options, including The Snooty Fox, The Priory Inn and The Royal Oak.

Grist Mill, Owlpen 

The Grist Mill is an early 18th-century watermill which sleeps up to 8 in four double bedrooms. This listed Grade 2 landmark building has been restored as a gem of a holiday home, with contemporary comfort and style, surmounted by lantern and cupola.

The Grist Mill is situated in the heart of Owlpen valley – about 20 minutes from Badminton – with lovely views over the mill pond and the valley. It has its own drive and enclosed garden, including a large table for al fresco dining. The private garden offers complete serenity, with the constant murmur of the Ewelme brook running gently by.

The friendly staff in the reception office are on hand to deal with any queries and to take bookings in the Cyder House Restaurant on the estate (prebooked only). The nearby villages of Uley, Nympsfield and towns of Dursley and Nailsworth also offer a variety of dining options for those looking for a night out.

For larger groups 

The Dutch Barn, Ewen  

Situated in the pretty English village of Ewen, the Dutch Barn has been built to a very high standard and will sleep 12 in comfort.

The ground floor space comprises the Italian hand built kitchen with all the luxuries and amenities that you’d expect from a property of this standard. Two dishwashers, two fridge-freezers, the latest electric Aga which brings a cosy ambience to the Barn.

The open plan Dining Room seats up to 16 people on a huge table; white table linen, comfortable chairs which encourage you a linger over a glass of wine. Keeping it warm there is a circular wood burner which makes you feel you’re in a chalet in Alps! The Drawing Room has sofas and comfy chairs aplenty, a huge TV with Sky Movies, Wi-Fi, Sky Sport and more.

Of the 6 bedrooms, 4 have en-suite bathrooms and the bedrooms 5 and 6 share a bathroom. One of the bedrooms is on the Ground Floor which is good for people who prefer this location.

There are plenty of nearby local pubs all serving good food, including The Wild Duck at Ewen, The Potting Shed in Crudwell and Eat Wild in Cirencester, which also offers a wider choice for those looking for a night out.

Austen House, Petty France

Austen House sleeps up to 14 guests in 4 spacious bedrooms plus double sofabed. The house offers an elegant Georgian sitting room, dining hall for everyone, large fully equipped kitchen, south facing terrace, hot tub and parking for 8 cars. Austen House is elegant and cosy with beautifully decorated rooms, perfect for a country weekend.

It is so close to Badminton you could almost see it. Whilst the house offers everything required for self-catering parties, there is a traditional bar and restaurant opposite the house with further options for eating out available within close proximity. You really couldn’t be much closer to the action!
