Alexander Whewall, a former winner of the Mark Todd Bridging the Gap scholarship, will be competing
at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials for the first time with Chakiris Star.
The pair were 19th on their four-star debut at Pau last Autumn and two years ago were crowned Smith & Williamson Intermediate Champions at the Festival of British Eventing.
In the run up to Badminton, we find out a little bit more about Alexander and Louis….
Tell us a little bit about your horse Chakiris Star?
Louis as he’s known at home, is a lovely horse to have on the yard. He is very easy to do and very laid back. He always tries his heart out for me and always wants to please. He’s owned by Lisa Coward and out of Pride of Main St and Chakiris
Has the recent bad weather changed your preparation plans for Badminton?
Luckily not so much. We managed to get to all of his prep runs apart from one. He was placed at Burnham Market and Belton in the Advanced, so we are really looking forward to Badminton now.
What were your initial thoughts when Eric Winter’s cross-country course was unveiled?
I couldn’t wait to get out and jump it! There are some questions on the course, but it wouldn’t be Badminton if it didn’t have them. I’m really looking forward to getting on the course and tackle the questions now.
Is it a course that you think will suit your horse?
Yes, I think it will because Louis is quite amenable between fences which will help with the tricky combinations on the course.
Who will you walk the cross-country course with for the first time?
I will probably walk it alone or with my dad the first time, and then I’ll walk it again with Lizzel Winter, who knows Louis and I really well and has been working closely with us for a long time.
You have been drawn number 18, do you think this will be beneficial to you on cross country day?
Yes, because we should have good ground, with not many going before us and it won’t be too long watching others go.
What are your expectations for your Badminton debut?
I would love to finish in the top 10, it would be a dream for me! Louis is more than capable, so let’s hope we are on form!
Good Luck Alex we hope you Louis have the most amazing time at Badminton and that it is super successful for you, Lisa and all of team Whewall.
