Eventer jump to the challenge for charity

A host of event riders are set for their biggest jump of the event season in aid of charity.

screen-shot-2016-10-25-at-12-43-25On Saturday October 29th, Willberry Wonder Pony is holding a tandem skydive challenge to raise funds for the charity which was set up to raise funds for bone cancer research and grant equine wishes to seriously ill people, inspired by young rider Hannah Francis, who sadly died earlier this year.

Among the event riders who’ve accepted the challenge are Hannah’s friends Dani Evans and Tom Grant, along with Laura Collett and Head Girl to Pippa Funnell, Frankie Murrell. Organisers Bernadette Hewitt, Spencer Sturmey and Toni Warren are hoping to see the full capacity of 40 places taken up for the charity jump.

The idea came about when Bernadette did a skydive for ABF the Soldiers’ Charity and Willberry Wonder Pony last month. She commented: “Holly Woodhead was laid up with a broken ankle and kindly lent me the Berry pony given to her by Hannah. The Army guys were able to secure Ditsyberry safely to jump out of a plane two miles high above Wiltshire. We’ve raised over £1,500 so when Spencer said how about a day for Willberry it was game on with the blessing of the trustees of Willberry Wonder Pony. And Holly’s in if the doctors give her the OK.”

Dani Evans said: “This is a fantastic way to get the eventing family together again, raising money and keeping Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony charity in the public eye. I know I will be petrified but nothing can be as frightening as the fear Hannah faced, and we are doing this to keep her memory and the charity alive and kicking!”

Tom Grant added; “Doing this skydive is probably the most terrifying thing I could imagine. When Dani asked me to do it my immediate answer was no, then she said it was for Willberry. I then had to swallow my pride and reply again, Yes, anything for Hannah. Hannah is and was such an inspiration to us all and for me to merely say no, simply because I was scared was not her style. I for one and I am sure hundreds of others want to do right by Hannah’s wishes and one of Hannah’s wishes was to make Willberry as big, or if not bigger than Pudsey. This is a great way to put Willberry’s wishes in the spotlight and draw more attention to such an incredible and phenomenal charity.”
