EVENT REPORTS – Sapey

Millie Wain reports…

While many of us were enthralled by the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, the second Sapey Horse Trials of the season took place on 2nd and 3rd September. There were classes from BE80(T) up to Novice; the event attracted over 500 entries across 18 sections. On Saturday, BE100 and Novice sections took place and BE80(T), BE90, BE100 classes were on Sunday.

French rider Arthur Pottier took the win in Novice section A with Dennis IX. They were in the lead after the dressage and added 2 time penalties from the cross country phase to complete on 26.0 penalties. No combinations in this section came home within the time on the cross country so Arthur’s quick cross country round secured the win to finish 4.6 penalties ahead of Jesse Campbell and Vendi Fox in second place. Third place went to Katie Bleloch and Cavalier Mickey Finn on 31.6 penalties.

There was one Nu18 section, which is for U18 riders aiming to be selected to compete for their region at the national championships held at Frickley Park. This section was won by Eleanor Binns with Wiseguy. This is their first season together and they were competing in their second Novice. The pair completed on their dressage score of 32.0 penalties and were one of just two combinations to complete the cross country phase within the optimum time of 4 minutes and 18 seconds. In second place were Hamish Clarke and Smashing Iris on 32.9 penalties and third place went to Tom Bird riding Night Fury.

Ella Hitchman

Section E, the Open Novice section, was won by Emily King riding the 6-year-old Quinlan Z. The stallion only started eventing this year and has already won three novice classes and accumulated 32 points. They completed on their dressage score of 28.3. The combination finished the same score as second place, which went to Ella Hitchman and Birchcol Rock Idol. However, Emily was 3 seconds closer to the optimum time on the cross country so she took first place. In third place were Jodie Stokes and Headsnook Mischief. They were only 0.3 penalties behind the top two combinations.

Georgia King had two rides in the BE100u18 and she finished first and third with Mojo IV and Drop The Subject respectively. This was her first competition back with Mojo IV since competing at the U18 Championships in July, where they finished in 9th place. Second place went to Camilla Read riding Cloonbarry Flare on 27.8 penalties.

The winners of section H were Ella Hitchman and In Your Dreams II. They posted the best dressage score of the weekend of 17.3 penalties and were one of two combinations to complete on a sub-20 dressage score. The pair have an excellent record; they have competed in four events, have won three of them and placed fifth in the other (they finished on their dressage score of 12.5 at West Wilts). Ella was over 5 penalties ahead of second place, which went to Loretta Joynson riding PSH Charisma.

There were two BE90RF sections taking place at Sapey. The top 20% of competitors would qualify for the Mitsubishi Motors Cup held at Badminton next May. Section N was competitive, with 15/21 combinations achieving sub-30 dressage scores. However, both of the jumping tracks caused problems and the optimum time on the cross country proved to be difficult to achieve. This made the competition very close, but Steph Lynn came out on top with Crystal VII. The pair scored 20.3 in the dressage and despite adding 4 time penalties on the cross country, they were 0.2 penalties ahead of Laura Hanson and Bonnie Release The Stars in second place. The winner of section O was Claire Al-Redha riding Legrande finishing on their dressage score of the 23.8.
