EVENT REPORTS – Poplar Park

Sarah Wells- Gaston reports..

More than 400 horses and riders headed to Poplar Park for its first British Eventing fixture with classes ranging from BE80(T) to Intermediate.

Maria Veale has recently returned to eventing, and she topped BE90 Section C with Gabbana II. The pair finished on their dressage score pf 27.5.

Maria, who works full time as a client service manager for Willis Re, commented: “I have recently returned to eventing after a 13-year break and having never thought I’d get the bug again I have owned Gizmo from a five year old and we do dressage, show jumping and eventing. We did some BE80’s last year and Poplar was our first BE90. Saturday was amazing, everything fell into place and we both loved it.”

Twenty-one-year-old Greta Mason topped Novice Section J with Vitoria DH Z. Based near Peterborough Greta runs her own yard producing event horses. She has owned the eight-year-old mare for just over a year. Their season has started off very successfully as the pair were second in a BE100 Open at Isleham on the opening weekend of the year.

Greta told Eventing Worldwide: “She had done some showjumping before I had her but I started her eventing career last year. I was thrilled with her win at the weekend. She’s only really just moved up to Novice at the end of last season so for her to come out and be so good so early on in the season was fantastic.

Caroline Bridge was a double winner – taking victory in BE80(T) Section E with Silver bridge Hoki and BE100 Section H with Eldyno.

Isabella Stagg and Quite A Compliment were the lowest scoring combination of the weekend, winning BE90 Section A on their dressage score of 20.3. The pair have qualified for the Mitsubishi Motors Cup, winning their regional qualifier at Shelford Manor, so a win was great preparation for the grassroots championship.

Another rider who has had a successful start to their season was Debbie Edmundson. Riding Beyond Argument, she topped BE90 Section B finishing on her dressage score of 23.5. The pair previously finished third at Isleham.
