Sarah Wells-Gaston reports …
Norton Disney is always a popular fixture on the BE calendar and this year’s spring fixture proved no different with 20 sections from BE80(T) to Open Novice.
Grace Donnor had the standout score of the weekend with a finish on dressage score win in BE100 Open Section M of 10, on board Marchwood. This gave the pair a winning margin of 14 penalties. This was only surpassed by Carrie Skelton’s dressage score of 5.8 in the same section with Ramesses V. Meanwhile Katie Brickman had a successful weekend. Not only did she top BE80(T) Section R with Greenkeld’s Moondance, she finished fifth in BE100 Section T with Black Jack V.
With a second and a third at their events in 2020, Emily Whysall and B Estier Santosh went one better on their first event of the year winning BE80(T) Section S.
Heather Urqhart and Rosscon Magic Mike kicked off their season in style with a win in BE90 Section P. The equine vet runs her own equine dentistry business.
She said: “I am still in shock. Rosscon Magic Mike was bought as a fairly wobbly four-year-old and it took a while for him to strengthen. But he is now seven and has grown up massively this winter. He has a cheeky personality, and the win was a huge surprise as I went wrong in my dressage test and we picked up a couple of time on the cross country as he was a little bit too enthusiastic at times. The plan is to step up to BE100 quite soon, and hopefully aim to qualify for Badminton grassroots 2022 at the new area qualifiers later this year.”
Phoebe Plumb and Haw Cruise were another combination to start their season in winning style, topping BE90 Section O. The 20-year-old from Cambridgeshire is studying Biomedical Engineering at Nottingham Trent University. She bought Haw cruise as an unbroken three-year-old from Ireland and backed and trained him herself.
She said: “I hadn’t been to Norton Disney before and, as it was our first competition, was expecting to go and have an average day. It’s fair to say we didn’t expect to win! I’m very proud of Cruise, although we may have not had the most stylish show jumping round, he certainly tried his best. We are currently looking to move up to BE100 and possibly a Novice at the end of the season.”
Piggy French came away from Norton Disney with another two wins to her name – Novice Section I with Cooley Kan Do and BE100 Section L with Brookfield Future News.
