Cat Jamieson reports ..

Larkhill Horse Trials held on Salisbury Plain ran classes from BE90 to Novice Level. As ever at Larkhill the ground was exceptional. Although within a race course, the course is varied with some steep inclines that will test fitness of both horse and rider.  The excellent going, in a natural amphitheatre means that the course is challenging and exciting for competitors and easy to spectate from a number of vantage points.  It has become one of the premier courses in the South West.

Novice section A – Fiona Kashel on Hamilton III – 29.5 – Kate Honey, had a successful day with 3 horses doing double clears at the event, with Eleanor Hubbards Cochise getting the gold star for a great top 10 placing. Michael Jackson was in 2nd, and also had a 2nd in Section D on Trevargo, with David Doel in 3rd

Novice section B – Lauren Yallop on Hacien – 31.1 – The top 4 all finishing on 31.1 or 31.3. Selina Milnes who had 4 horses at the event came 8th in this section and had 2 other top 10 placings and a 19th, with all 4 horses going double clear.

Some would say that the time for the 90 sections was slightly lenient, with around 80% of competitors going too fast and gaining too fast time penalties.

Emma told us “Joey is a 15.2hh, Irish Blue and White gelding, who is 14 years old. I have owned him for 5 years.
We are currently preparing for the Mitsubishi Motors Cup at Badminton. After cantering through the cross country finish line in 2018, instantly I wanted to secure my place to go back! It was such an amazing experience and I can’t wait to do it again!”
Holly Farr was 2nd on Rathcline Dun Shadow and Holly is the organiser and secretary of the Larkhill event, so well done to Holly for managing to run a highly successful event and coming 2nd in the section.

Lauren Collard,  Eventing Worldwide’s Grassroots blogger, came 2nd in one of the be 90 sections, with a 1st place at Tweseldown last month, they are surely set up fantastically and should be ones to watch at the MMC in May, we wish them all the luck in the world.

BE90 Sun Section J – Deborah Fisher – Woodline Lady – 18.0 who finished the vent on the lowest dressage score of the 2 days and a double clear to easily take a Grassroots RF Qualification ticket. Tara, Kays mum said

“My daughter was placed second in the BE90 open – we were thrilled as she only entered the open as we were too late to enter the 90 class. She’s 13 and only started Eventing this horse last year.
Like any teenager, riding for GB and the Olympics! But more short term, Badminton Grassroots and the U18 team for Frickley. She came 3rd in the U18100 at Swacliffe so fingers crossed for her next regional.
Tara’s SJ instructor Hannah Berryman came 5th in the 90 section, her first time Eventing. She used to groom for Pippa Funnel and worked at The Billy Stud.”

BE90 Sun Section L – Suzanne Homewood – Foxjolly Jovial Darco – 27.5, Michelle Northmore in 2nd place and Millie Juleff in 3rd.

BE100 Sun Section M – Dani Evans -Diarana DH Z – 22.8. Sarah Warner who was 5th in a BE100 section said online “the ground is always amazng at Larkhill, Joe had a good day, I was glad he has learnt to cope woth unexpected guests in the arena, as he had 2 crows who wouldn’t leave us alone” The crows are very much a common theme at Larkhill.

BE100 Sun Section N – Angela Sumner – Free As Air II – 26.5

Angela commented “We’ve had a bit of an up and down season so far. We won Twesledown 90, then it went a bit wrong at Munstead with me going wrong in the dressage. Then a very sticky sj round with a pole down and a stop on the xc at a fence he had done many times before! Then we did a good dressage at goring heath. But then 3 down sj but clear xc. Then yesterday at Larkhill he was amazing all day and we finished on our dressage of 26.5. Frankie is kind of all or nothing at the moment and certainly keeps me on my toes! We are aiming for the grassroots at Badminton.”
