EVENT REPORTS – Floors Castle

Jemma Docherty reports…

The fantastic Land Rover Floors Castle Horse Trials lived up to its name with four days of competition in glorious sunshine. With new sponsors, the event attracted huge entries across all of its classes, with 21 sections running from CIC** through to BE90.

Izzy Taylor led the CIC** from start to finish with a score of 23.8 with Monkeying Around. Izzy was closely followed be Hector Payne and Top Biats in second on 24.3 and Sam Ecroyd riding Kasseedorf in third on 24.8. The top six in this section (Section A) were separated by only 3.1.

The CIC* was won by Antonia Baumgart on a score of 25.9 with Rapunzel Vom Quellhof.  Antonia is based with Chris Bartle and this was her first UK event, kick starting her season in style.  The CIC* (Section B) saw a total of 62 combinations come forward, many first timers at this level stepping up to the international stage and a number using this run for their final prep ahead of Tattersalls at the end of the month. Second went to Jennifer Bowman and Licanto H with Harry Harding and Gotues S in third.

Matthew Wright had a great few days with a win on Prince Mayo in Open Intermediate Section C. The combination finished on their dressage score of 28.2, whilst his second ride – DHI Paparazzi finished 4th in this section. Matthew continued his success with another win in Novice section J on Monbeg Maximus. Mathew has made the pledge to donate all his winnings this season to his chosen charities of Orchid and Mind, and from this weekend alone he donated a fantastic £665.

The grassroots classes were as always well supported with eight BE90 sections including a BE90 Open, six BE100 sections including an Open and Under 18 and four Novice sections including an Open and Under 18.

Ruth Edge made a return to eventing to take the win in the Novice section D on Pauldarys Dun and Only knocking a pole to add 4 faults to her impressive as always dressage score of 23.8 for a final score of 28.6 – a 4.4 penalty winning margin.

Afterwards Ruth told Eventing Worldwide; It felt really good to be back out eventing – I realised how much I had missed it. Floors Castle is my favourite event so I am thrilled to have won there. It was Dun and Onlys first Novice so I couldn’t be more proud of him. I am certainly hoping to carry on and do more events – just for fun and see where it goes. The comradery within the sport is second to none. It was great to see so many friends happy to see me on a horse instead of coaching.

Charlotte Agnew made the long trip back home to Scotland for the event from her base in Gloucestershire, and it paid off with a win in BE90 Section Q1 with Hamiro.

Eilidh Macaulay scored her second win in a row with Casper Z. She topped the table in BE100 Under 18 Section R with a score of 26.1. This came off the back of her win at Kirriemuir.
