Berriewood Horse Trials is located in Shropshire and held two days of grassroots classes ranging from BE80(T) to BE100plus level. Since 2011, there has been a BE event held there each year and this year, the event attracted nearly 400 entries.
BE80(T) section A was won by Gabrielle Macdonald riding Menai Laurence. The pair posted a great dressage score of 22.3 penalties, leaving them 3.5 penalties ahead of the rest of the section. They added one time fault from the show jumping phase to their dressage score and went clear in the cross country within the optimum time. In second place was Caroline Fiddler and Skycur Times and third place went to Abbi England with Perl. 2ndand 3rd place were two of the five combinations that finished on their dressage score in section A.
The BE100plus section was won by Louise Price aboard the 12 year old mare Coolcronan Gold. This was the combination’s first BE win as well as their first attempt at BE100plus level. They led from the first phase and completed on their dressage score of 28.3 penalties. Just 0.2 penalties separated the top two and in second place were Helen Jones and Merlot.
Andrew Downes and Castledown Kilbay took the top spot in BE100 section I. The combination scored 22 in the dressage and despite adding 4 faults in the show jumping, they held onto their lead to take the win by 4 penalties. The show jumping seemed to cause a few problems, with only 6 clear rounds in section I. Second place went to Rosie Alcorn and Mr Finntastic with a score of 30 and in third place was Vicky Arnold with Forever Van Het Sonnishof, completing on their dressage score of 32.
Paula Jane Holden and Pallasgreen Promise had their second win of the season; their other win was at Warwick Hall a few weeks ago. The pair finished on their dressage score of 26 penalties to take the win in BE90 section D by over 4 penalties. In second place was Susan Scott with Monarchs Simply Red and in third place were Harry Harding and Top Gun VII.
There were 13 starting combinations in the BE100open section and it was won by Rio Hall and For Vehlage. Sam Smith and Galwaybay Buddy were in the lead after the dressage phase with a score of 25.8 but the pair added 4 faults in the show jumping to finish in second place to Rio Hall and For Vehlage, who completed on their dressage score of 28.8 penalties.
