Equine Canada has announced the athletes who have been nominated to the Canadian National and Elite Eventing Squads.
Those selected to the Elite squad have a proven record at CCI/CIC3* and/or CCI4* in the previous 12 months that demonstrates the combination is capable of being competitive at the 2016 Olympic Games. Those selected to the 2016 Canadian Eventing Elite Squad are (in alphabetical order): Rebecca Howard, Holly Jacks, Selena O’Hanlon, Jessica Phoenix and Waylon Roberts.
Combinations names on the National Squad are those with proven form at CCI/CIC3* and/or CCI4* and/or CCI 2*s that demonstrates that the combination is capable of being competitive at the 2018 World Equestrian Games and 2020 Olympic Games. Riders names on the 2016 Canadian Eventing National Squad are (in alphabetical order): Peter Barry, Hawley Bennett-Awad, Kyle Carter, Lisa Marie Fergusson, Lesley Grant Law, Colleen Loach, Kathryn Robinson and Karl Slezak.
“Our objective has been to develop a program that encourages our athletes to work within a team environment, while supporting their individual programs to maximize performance objectives,” said Ozzie Sawicki, program High Performance Advisor. “We will continue to support current elite athletes who have their sights set on Rio, while also engaging athletes with longer-term goals set on the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games and 2020 Tokyo Olympics.”
The Eventing High Performance Squad criteria are reviewed twice per year, with athletes notified of their status in December and June.
