As the Longines FEI European Eventing Championships at Blair Castle heads into the second day of dressage, Great Britain currently lie in the Gold medal position.
But with each team fielding their third and fourth riders into today’s rotation, there is still time for this to change.
Pippa Funnell will be the third of the British team riders into the dressage arena with Sandman 7. The combination were 6th at Bramham International CCI*** and were the winners at Chatsworth CIC ***.
The final British team rider will be William Fox-Pitt and Bay My Hero. Owned by Catherine Witt, Bay My Hero won the CIC*** at Hartpury International Horse Trials last month and was fourth at the Rolex Kentucky CCI**** in May having won the previous year. William took the Bronze individual medal at Malmo two years ago.
There are also four Great British individuals taking to the arena today. Izzy Taylor will be first into the arena with KBIS Briarlands Matilda followed by Oliver Townend with Fenya’s Elegance – a horse previous competed by Aofie Clarke. Francis Whittington will bring forward Easy Target, winner of the Blenheim Horse Trials CCI *** last year, while Wills Oakden and Greystone Midnight Melody will make their championship debut.
For the Germans, Sandra Auffarth and Ingrid Klimke will perform their dressage in the afternoon session. Currently lying in the Bronze medal position are the French team. Nicolas Touzaint and Thomas Carlile will compete this morning.
There has been one withdrawal overnight – the popular Swedish rider Ludwig Svennerstal and Franzipan. On social media he expressed his disappointment saying: “She did not trot up well yesterday and we have spent the day investigating what the problem is without success. We have decided that it is not fair on the horse and not in the interest of the horses welfare to continue competing. Franzipan will now go home for further investigation to find the problem.”
Eventing Worldwide will be posting regular reports to keep you up to date with all the action.
