Cobra 18 – bringing scope and substance to future eventers

Breeding for eventing is not an exact science. To be honest, trying to breed any top-class sport horse takes time, research and a considerable amount of good luck. By choosing a good stallion, however, you will go a long way towards breeding the very best foal possible from your mare.

To make it in the sport of eventing a horse needs many attributes… blood, step, scope, stamina, temperament… and finding a stallion that can pass all of these characteristics on to his offspring can be like finding a needle in a haystack. But the stallion Cobra 18 looks to be one such needle.

A 2003 172cm Bay Westphalian Stallion, Cobra 18 is by the world-famous show-jumping stallion Cornet Obolensky, with his damsire Ramiro Z consolidating his enviable jumping genetics. While many Showjumping stallions lack the blood required to breed a top-class event horse, Cobra 18 benefits from the essential thoroughbred blood of Usurpator xx to make him 49% thoroughbred, with the step and temperament required for the modern day event horse.

Cobra 18 himself had a successful showjumping career, jumping to 1.50m level until a career ending injury in 2014 forced his retirement to stud. But what was the sports’ loss is the breeders gain!

Not only does Cobra 18 have the competition performance and genetics to make him a top-class stallion, he is also already a proven sire. From the small number of mares that he covered as a 4-year-old before embarking on his competitive career, currently his most notable offspring is the 10 year old Dublin (Cobra 18 X Calido), who is proving to be a serious talent. Having made his 1.60m debut last year with Carly Anthony of Team Eric Lamaze, Dublin is now under the new ownership of Team USA’s and current World No. 1 Kent Farrington and has enjoyed some impressive results on the international circuit so far this year.

Cobra 18 also boasts some top-class eventers as relatives, including the 2002 gelding Phoenix L (Platini M x Dinard (Cobra 18’s full sister) x Ramiro Z. Phoenix L has competed to CCI*** level with Dan Jocelyn and is a horse that moves with quality and blood and shows an exceptional amount of bravery.
