There was drama at the First Horse Inspection at this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials – with two horses withdrawing from the hold box and one loose horse.
Eighty two horses were presented to the Ground Jury of Nick Burton (GBR – President), Jane Hamlin (USA) and Christian Steiner (AUT). Caroline Clarke and Touch Too Much withdrew before the horse inspection took place. Both Hanna Berg (SWE) with Quite Survivor and Tamra Smith with Wembley were sent to the hold box, with both withdrawing before reinspection.
During the inspection, Izzy Taylor (GBR) lost the reins of a very spooky Springpower who took against the banks of photographers, putting in a quick 180 turn to head back to the stables. Fortunately a swift moving Tim Price (NZL), who was next to present, to put himself between the runaway horse and the Archway, arms waving, to prevent what might have been a more serious incident.
Eight horses will go forward to the dressage, with Pippa Funnell & Majas Hope being first into the arena at 9.30am.
