carried on her good form, and leads the dressage in the CCI3* on Ipos at the halfway stage.
“That was the best test we have done,” said Sandra, who was part of Germany’s gold medal-winning team and also took individual silver at last week’s European Championships. “He’s getting better and better on the flat as he gets stronger. He’s really sweet, and is [her top horse] Opgun Louvo’s best friend.”
Her score of 37.2 puts her three penalties clear of second place Dani Evans, who withdrew from the Longines FEI European Eventing Championships at Blaire Castle last week. In this morning’s session, the Bristol-based rider piloted Raphael II to a score of 40.2.
Three-times Blenheim winner William Fox-Pitt is in 6th on the Hon Teresa Stopford-Sackville’s experienced Cool Mountain with 43.3. Despite being part of the Gold medal winning Great British team at the World Equestrian Games in 2010, the horse is making its first visit to the Oxfordshire event. After dressage, William said: “It’s brilliant to have him here. He is such an old friend, and he’s great horse to have had. It’s lovely to get him her and lovely for his owners. It’s been a bit of a bumpy rider over the last couple of years with a few niggly injuries and its been a a real team effort to get him here – he’s feeling fantastic. He’s 15 years old and everything at this stage is a bonus. We’re here to have a good time and to enjoy it and hopefully have a good run.”
In the CIC3* class for eight and nine year olds, last year’s winner Jonelle Price held the lead with Cloud Dance II. Their score of 33.2 puts them 7.4 penalties ahead of second place Alex Hua Tian and Don Geniro (40.5). Ireland’s Jonty Evans lies in third place on a score of 43.8 with Cooley Rorkes Drift going into the show jumping. The highest place British rider is Francis Whittington on Cavalier Venure in sixth on a score of 44.9
Dressage starts again tomorrow at 8.30am in the CCI3* and riders will be led off by Sam Jennings and Coleplay. In the CIC3* 8/9 year old class, dressage will start at 9.00am with Izzy Taylor and Briarlands Birdsong first into the arena.
