I wanted to write into this section about my wonderful Veteran 19 year old x racehorse who romped round his first event of the year to finish 2nd in the BE80 at Bicton. We finished on the same score as the winner but due to our (ooops but not surprising) rather faster round we were a little further from the optimum time.
I first got City Reach on loan after a nasty accident off a youngster when the sensible part of my head told me that with no facilities and working full time it was about time I just got a horse to have some fun with , rather than trying to produce a youngster. My confidence slightly dented I knew I wanted a horse that I could compete & enjoy but as an experienced rider I still wanted one with ‘character’! Along came Squidge into my life & boy does he have character!!
He had run on the flat & over hurdles, with 6 wins on the flat and I got him from a lovely PC family who had done a bit of everything with him. He could jump but was not that confident & had wonderful paces but had no idea of collection or working from behind. Cantering sideways was his idea of lateral work!
4 years on with a lot of help from my wonderful trainer Diana Strachan we have just got our first BD Elementary points, were 9th at the BE80T Champs last year & have our eye firmly on the RoR Unafilliated Eventing Championships this year.
After the calmest dressage ever this early in the year (last time at Bicton all I wanted to do was stay within the white boards!), I came out of the arena rather in shock. He then jumped a lovely round in the SJ & off to his favourite bit the XC. We can no longer stand quietly in the start box for the count down, I have to wait for the starter to get to 5,4 …then its safe, otherwise we just have a melt down! He rocketed round, ears pricked all the way and gave me a fabulous ride.
I was really quite shocked to find out I was 2nd, with a dressage of 34 I thought I would be well down the order but turns out that was one of the best of the day in my arena. The only downer of the day was a query that delayed prize giving for a good hour. Cheffings Equine sponsored the sections & my lovely prize of some Lemieux wrap round boots topped off a great day.
Roll on Millfield BE in May.
